Olivia the road is longThe engine hums a sleepy songThe streetlights slide across your faceThe night is such a gentle placeGrandma waved us down the laneThe window holds a little rainYour hands have let the blanket goAnd every mile is soft and slowSleep Olivia the night is kindThe road is winding warm and slowSleep Olivia our door is nearThe porch light left a lamp to glowThe heater breathes a little sighThe moon is riding just as highYour cheek is resting on the seatAnd all the town has gone to sleepSleep Olivia the night is kindThe road is winding warm and slowSleep Olivia our door is nearThe porch light left a lamp to glow

Where the name comes from

Olivia is closely associated with the olive branch and, by extension, peace - the name is often credited to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, though isolated earlier uses exist, and its exact relationship to Oliver is debated among name historians.

Why this moment matters

Falling asleep just before arriving home, after fighting sleep the whole way, is one of the most reliable running jokes in parenting.

The story behind this song

The drive home from grandma's is just long enough for her to fall fast asleep somewhere around the last turn.

A bedtime song with a name in it

A slow lullaby built around one child's name: a good night song for bedtime, nap time and the last song of the day.
