Lyrics

Personalize this song

Your name is written in a bookIn careful ink upon the pageEmma in a steady handBefore you knew a single wordThe paper waited years for youAnd now it has your name to holdThe book was old before you cameIts spine is soft its corners bentIt carried other names beforeAnd every one of them was lovedNow yours is written under theirsIn ink that will not wash awayEmma there upon the pageSmall and certain black and clearEmma there upon the pageYou were wanted you are hereOne day you will find the pageAnd run a finger down the inkYou will read the names aboveAnd know the room they made for youAnd you will take the pen yourselfAnd write the ones who come from youEmma there upon the pageSmall and certain black and clearEmma there upon the pageYou were wanted you are here

Where the name comes from

Emma developed as a short form of older Germanic names built on ermen, an element usually glossed as 'whole' or 'universal' - it became a name in its own right by the medieval period.

Why this moment matters

Writing a child's name inside the cover of a book is a small act, but it's also a family quietly saying this book belongs to someone now.

The story behind this song

Her name goes in the front of a favourite book in careful handwriting, the first inscription of what will be many.
