Leo wears his big straw hatThe tall grass tickles his kneeRed dust puffs beneath his shoesThere is so much here to seeHey Leo look a zebraLook up and count the birdsThe elephants go marchingWithout a single wordDown where the river bends and coolsThe hippos yawn the herons wadeA lizard naps upon a rockInside the acacia shadeHey Leo look a zebraLook up and count the birdsThe elephants go marchingWithout a single wordStomp your boots and shout hoorayThe land is gold the sky is wideLeo runs and the warm wind runsAnd both of them are wildHey Leo look a zebraLook up and count the birdsThe elephants go marchingWithout a single word

Where the name comes from

Leo comes straight from the Latin word for 'lion' - one of the more literal name origins, used across many European languages with barely any change.

Why this moment matters

A first big trip abroad rearranges a child's whole sense of what the world contains, even if they're too young to remember most of it later.

The story behind this song

A straw hat, red dust on his shoes, zebras in the distance, and a wide river where the hippos yawn - his first real adventure.
