Franklin holds on to Daddy's handWhere the big gray elephants standTheir ears go flap their feet go stompThey munch the hay with a crunchy chompOne big elephant dips its trunkDown in the pool with a sploosh and plunkThen whoosh it sprays up to the skyAnd Franklin giggles my oh myBig trunk Franklin sing it loudToot your trumpet for the crowdEverybody stomp and swayBig trunk Franklin hip hoorayThe baby elephant joins the funSplashing mud in the warm bright sunHe swings his arm and stomps his feetAn elephant dance is such a treatBig trunk Franklin sing it loudToot your trumpet for the crowdEverybody stomp and swayBig trunk Franklin hip hooray

Where the name comes from

Franklin is usually read as 'freeholder', from a Middle English surname; its later use was partly in honor of Benjamin Franklin.

Why this moment matters

Elephants are the zoo animal that makes every child stop and stare, and a trunkful of water sprayed into the air gets a giggle every time.

The story behind this song

Franklin holds Daddy's hand at the elephant enclosure, watching the big grey elephants stomp, munch hay and spray water high from their trunks.
